Morton’s extension is a type of modification used in foot orthotics, typically a rigid extension that runs under the first metatarsal head (beneath the big toe) to the distal tip of the toe. It is often made from materials like carbon fiber, plastic, or firm cork, and serves specific biomechanical purposes.

Benefits of Morton’s Extension in Foot Orthotics

  • Limits motion at the first MTP joint – reduces pain in hallux limitus or rigidus.
  • Improves push-off efficiency – acts as a rigid lever for propulsion.
  • Redistributes forefoot pressure – offloads lesser metatarsals.
  • Stabilizes the first ray – supports the medial column and reduces hypermobility.
  • Decreases toe-off pain – protects the painful big toe joint during gait.

Best for: Hallux limitus/rigidus, 1st MTP arthritis, post-surgical stabilization.
